Muktinath is one of the highest temples in the world. Muktinath is also commonly popular as “Mukti Kshetra” in Nepal and India which literally means place of liberation. One can expect compassion or get Moksha there. It is a sacred place for all Hindu, Buddhist and Visahnava religions. There are only few places in the world where people of different religions or faiths can go together and worship as per their belief. One of such great place that has stood the test of time in demonstrating harmony amidst religious heterogeneity from thousands of years is Muktinath in Nepal. Historians and researchers have predicted the origin of Muktinath more than 2000 years.

Vaishnavi (followers of God Vishnu in Hinduism) community considers Muktinath as one of the Divya Desams out of their 108 supreme places where Lord Vishnu believed to be resided. The sacred water that flows through 108 stone spouts at the back of the main temple represents water from all 108 Vaishnava shrines. Pilgrilms are allowed to take holy bath and collect holy water (Jal) that comes through 108 taps. In Buddhist religion, Muktinath is popularly known as Chumig Gyatsa, which means “The Hundred Springs.” For both Tibetan and Nepali Buddhists; it is revered as one of the 24 places where Guru Rinpoche had practiced in the 8th century while travelling to Tibet from India via Nepal. The nuns of Chumig Gyatsa are also considered to be dakinis, dancing goddesses who are manifestations of energy in space.

Every morning religious ceremony begins with puja and prayers conducted by the Hindu priest who is also in charge of Muktinath temple. He later hands over all the functions to be carried out by a local Buddhist nun (aani or jhuma). Nun will handle all services to both Hindu and Buddhist devotees.  In the evening, the Hindu priest will come to conclude the religious function by organizing evening puja including lamp-offering ceremony commonly known as Aarti.

The Muktinath Temple is a perfect example of cultural and religious symbiosis, where Hindu temples and Buddhist gompas (chortens) are coexisted. The mutual respect and support of the two religions here show that they have blended well without deteriorating their own identities. This great understanding and assimilation of the spirit of the different religions at Muktinath is truly a remarkable one.

The recent tourism development in the area has garnered attention from both Hindu and Buddhist people which has improved both the inhabitants’ lifestyle and the area’s economy. Muktinath is also a stop point where trekkers spend overnight after crossing the toughest Thorong La (5416 m) pass.

Our helicopter tour package is suitable for individual traveler to family members. A helicopter can carry up to 5 people about 480 kilograms of weight. Muktinath is ready to welcome people having variety of backgrounds and belief from all over the world. Please feel free to contact Nepal Environmental treks & Expedition to arrange a charter (private) Helicopter flight to Muktinath.
